to the public today and likely will be for a couple of days due to safety reasons. president obama is visiting the damage for himself today. >> check meanwhile, thousands in and near ocean city were forced to evacuate before the storm made landfall. residents say that there was plenty of wind damage to pickup, debris, down signs, and the buildings will need to be repaired. the worst damage was done by the water. the swollen day flooded city streets and stores and ocean waves as high as 13 feet washed away most of the beaches and dunes and a large portion of the fishing pier. all in all, residents consider themselves lucky. closer to baltimore, we spotted people in the low-lying city areas to have to wade through floodwaters, people in wilson's. and other areas are used to flooding waters, but they say this was not nearly as bad as 2003's isabel. >> compared to isabelle, a piece of cake. my whole baseman had been flooded to the ceiling. >> this is mild, compared the late. -- comparatively. this is an ice storm, but compared to dispel -- is about, this is nothing. >> governor martin

days until election day, president obama heading back on the campaign trail after a three day hold on campaigning to keep an eye on hurricane sandy. he's making up for lost time hitting three swing states today and spending all day tomorrow in ohio. first stop this morning, wisconsin. the latest poll shows the president has a three point lead. that is within the margin of error. down from a six point edge a couple weeks ago. in new hampshire, mitt romney also in a statistical tie. a month ago before the debate, the president held a seven point lead in new hampshire. in iowa, the president leads mitt romney by six points, a drop slightly from his eight point lead earlier in october. the president surveying storm damage yesterday. mitt romney softened his attacks mentioning the president's name not a single time during three florida rallies. instead, mr. romney expressed the need for unity. >> we come together at times like this and we want to make sure they have a speedy and quick recovery from their financial and in many cases personal loss. now people coming together is what's als

a big day for the obama campaign, the sunday before election day back in 2008. they would organize for a lot of african-american voters to go straight from church to the polls to early vote. obviously not the case this time, but you do have a lot of election officials who have found a loophole in this law, and what they point out is you can go in person today, sunday, for your absentee ballot, you can request it in person and turn it back around. so even though an absentee ballot is p differently than the regular vote, you can still use absentee. >> the president is expected to speak at 3:43 eastern time. we'll take that live when it happens. >>> in the meantime, no presidential candidate has not won the white house without winning ohio. mitt romney doesn't plan to be the exception. here he is in cleveland arguing it's time for a change at the top. >> putting aside all the excuses and all the ads and all the attacks, and look at the record. because, you see, talk is cheap. but a record, it's real, and it's earned with real effort. change is not measured in words and speeches. chang

day. the governor and president obama took a helicopter ride over the area from atlantic city down to an area where the governor had told people to get off and in many cases they didn't and he kind of jokingly but firmly let them know when they were speaking a couple minutes after the video you're seeing right now, he let them know he was not happy with them but he'd give them a break this time around. but it's just a very, very kind of like -- this is a -- you know it's not a big state geographically but it's a very densely populated state and very diverse when it comes to geography as well. the highlands took a tremendous hit because that's where the winds seemed to be the strongest and trees came down and power is out there and there's no telling when it will be restored. along the shore, of course, you're seeing some of the damage that occurred there where once stood houses there are now waves in some cases. then you go up farther north closer to new york city across the hudson and you have places like jersey city and hoboken, places that are populated with an awful lot of peop

the rest of the day doing storm response with president obama. as you can see, this is a shoreline district fronting the new york harbor. i know this has been a difficult past couple days, what kind of damage are you seeing in your district? >> it's all kinds of damage. i mentioned union beach to you. three or four blocks from the bay, the storm surge came in and the waves were pounding on top of the houses. somehow it just washed away completely. i had never seen anything like that before. there are other place where's almost the entire town was under water, almost up to the second floor of the homes and they don't see to be habitable any more. you have towns that were wiped out. i came, i apologize from being dressed this way, i saw the natural gas explosion, we had a gas explosion that wiped out five homes adjacent to each other. and i was talking to the people there. as the storm surge came in, i guess it knocked off the boiler on the tank, and a house went up in flames and four other houses. >> we think back about katrina and what a big impact that was on our country, we rarel

election day, judy. but looking at the maps and the polling it's clear that president obama still has a narrow advantagin terms of hw you get to 270 electoral votes. two big developments to me have happened in the last 48 hours. the first one is the kind of ads governor romney is running. you mentioned one of them in your piece, that's the one in florida linking president obama to chavez and castro. the other one in ohio where governor romney for the first time brings up the auto issue where he's been battered on. neither of those ads were released to the press, they were just put on the air. that, as you know, is a giveaway that they don't want that ad to e wrten aboutthey wnt voters to see it. and that to me says they still have to move numbers in both florida and ohio and the second big thing, judy, the fact that governor romney on sunday is going to be in the philadelphia suburbs, that really speaks to the fact that they're looking for a way to 270 besides ohio. >> woodruff: margaret, you cover the white house, you're talking to them. they're hearing what the romney people are doi

break. today is the first day. president obama spends the entire day in ohio. he's got stops in springfield, lima, hilliard in franklin county which has voted for democrats in the last three elections but his other two stops are in counties which voted for mccain in 2008. after a morning rally in wisconsin romney is also in ohio today. in aetna and westchester both counties that voted republican the last three elections. you look at the president's campaign schedule and it makes the buckeye state look like an airline hub for airforce one with ohio stops every day through the election. colorado, swing through florida, got to change planes in ohio. mitt romney not only focused on ohio but is trying to broaden the battleground map. what is he up to here with this decision to campaign in pennsylvania on sunday? he's also got new hampshire on his list twice not once. the smallest swing state. they think it is edging their direction but more importantly for their math the 270 they don't get there with florida, virginia, ohio. they get there with florida, virginia, ohio, and one small

carolina. in 2008, 51% of the electorate voted before election day. essentially, obama won the election before election day. john mccain won the election day vote but obama had already won the election in the early voting period. we have already had 1 million people voted north carolina. -- voters in north carolina. at this point, the democrats are doing better on the early voting, it appears. we don't have a vote count so we don't know exactly what the tally is. if you look at things -- we know things like number of active americans who have voted and that is up from the percentage who voted in 2008. percentage is greater this time at this juncture that was in 2008. the number of younger voters who tend to be more for obama than for running a, a greater percentage is up this time compared to 2008. those are all good signs for the obama campaign. but, what that will mean at the end, we don't know but the obama campaign had a good signal from that. host: we have a chart from an article in the "atlantic." it talks about absentee ballot request in north carolina. in 2008 and again
